Game Mechanics

At its heart, A Day in the Life: Sober Edition is more about survival than fighting. Addiction and urges can’t always be “defeated” head-on—they must often be endured, resisted, and waited out. Our mechanics reflect that truth.

Core Systems:

  • Sobriety Meter → Tracks Aisha’s state as she moves through her day. Every choice and encounter affects her resilience.

  • Enemy AI → Monsters patrol, chase, and attack using state-based behaviors. Each represents a different trigger—temptation, stress, or dependency.

  • Boss Battles → Major encounters where a central monster spawns mini-monsters that overwhelm Aisha until she overcomes them. The final moment always ends with the mirror shard, her symbol of self-control.

Player Abilities:

  • Movement & Shooting → Smooth, responsive controls that let Aisha navigate her environments and defend herself when she must.

  • Coping Mechanisms → Power-ups inspired by real-life strategies (breathing exercises, calling a friend, grounding techniques) help her restore strength and balance.

Progression & Levels:

  • Life Stages → Each level represents a stage of Aisha’s life—high school, college, and the workplace—showing how struggles with sobriety evolve over time.

  • Score System → Rewards persistence, self-care, and resilience, rather than brute force or speed.

Finishing Move:

  • Mirror Shard Mechanic → At the climax of every boss fight, Aisha discovers a glowing shard. Using it as a weapon symbolizes facing herself and reclaiming control.
